SUMMER READING REQUIREMENT FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2022-2023

The English Department of Central High School is excited to announce the Summer Reading Requirements for 2022. In support of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives at Central High School, the English Department decided to collaborate with the Free Library of Philadelphia in support of the One Book, One Philadelphia choice of texts, My Broken Language, written by Central alumna Quiara Alegría Hudes. Please find the following reading assignments for the summer of 2022:

  • All students entering English I, English II, English III, and English IV must read and study the required reading selection.
  • Students entering English II Honors, English III AP, English IV AP must read the additional readings listed on the Summer Reading list for the class.

All of our English teachers will assess the reading of these books within the first week of school. While these assignments can be a combination of both formative and summative assessments such as class analyses, objective tests, verbal and written presentations, and research projects, the assessment for summer reading will be a major grade for the first quarter.   These initial assessments will demonstrate student preparation of the coming year, serve as a diagnostic tool for the English Teachers, and be the source for the initial grades entered for the new school year. Students are strongly encouraged to purchase the books; however, students may also borrow the books from any library. The English Department will provide a study guide for My Broken Language and students are strongly encouraged to take notes and annotate each work. The texts may be used for multiple purposes during the school year in multiple disciplines; also, the texts may be assessed on Mid-terms and Final examinations.

Suggestions for Note-Taking:

  • Research authors, locales, and critical reviews for each work.
  • For fiction—takes notes in a literary journal on settings, themes, style, plot, vocabulary, characterization, conflict, tone, mood, current societal application, self-inquiry
  • For non-fiction—take notes in a literary journal on the subject, style, speaker, occasion, conflict, tone, mood, self-inquiry, societal application.
