  • Black Women Physicians Panel

The AASU will be co-sponsoring a Black Women Physicians Panel with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Central Alumni, and “twin-sister-docs”, Dr. Wardlaw and Dr. McDonald. Participants will be exposed to the medical field, hear medical doctors talk about their professions and their career paths, and have the opportunity to ask questions. Black women make up less than 3 percent of all physicians in the United States, and Latina women make up less than 2 percent, with African American and Latino medical school applications declining each year. For this reason, this event will offer priority to Black and Latina girls at Central as this session seeks to raise awareness about the exciting and in-demand careers in the medical field and encourage Black and Latina girls to join the field. The event will be held from 8 am – 9:45 am, in the auditorium, on Thursday, February 24th. The participants for the panel discussion are all Central Alumni:

Delana Wardlaw, MD (251)

Elana McDonald, MD (251)

Safiyyah Shabazz, MD (251)

Crystale Cruz, DO (255)

  • History of Afro Asian Alliances

The APIU and AASU are collaborating to co-sponsor a workshop titled, “The History of Afro Asian Alliances,” to be facilitated by educator, curriculum writer, and community organizer, Deborah Wei. In this interactive workshop, participants will be introduced to the heritage of solidarity between African Americans and Asian Americans and uncover the foundations of this largely unknown history. This event is in response to the ongoing, targeted, violent attacks on Septa towards Asian students, and also proactive in uniting our students so that they know and understand that our communities have historically supported one another. The workshop will be held directly after school, in the Spain Conference Center, on Tuesday, February 22, until 4:30 pm.

The Fulbright In the Classroom presentation will be facilitated by 3-time Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Philadelphia Public Schools, Nadira Branch.
